One of Victorian Walsall`s leading manufacturers of lorinery and saddlery, the firm [of Hampson & Scott] is probably best remembered today for the production of the splendid Equine Album, one of the most comprehensive catalogues of horse- related products ever published. The firm claimed to have been established in 1794 by a Mr Birch., bit maker to the Prince of Wales (later King George IV). It was later acquired by two employees, James Hampson and John Scott, who moved the business to Whittimere Street in 1876. In 1890 the site was cleared and an impressive new factory, the Clarence Works, was erected in its place- complete with the latest telephonic requirements and a tearoom for the employees (sadly this building was demolished in 1988). The firm`s most impressive memorial is the celebrated Equine Album. The Album is undated, but it described as almost ready for publication in September 1900. `Saddlery and Harness` magazine commented "we can safely say we have never seen a more complete work as illustrative of the saddler`s requirements than this". In addition to a huge range of saddlery, bits, stirrups and spurs of all kinds, the catalogue includes such items as horse brushes, dung baskets, and conditioning powders. Some of these items were probably produced by other manufacturers on behalf of Hampson and Scott, but it is nevertheless a remarkable publication, reflecting Walsall`s role as the great international centre for the supply of `everything for the horse`[information obtained from Walsall's local government site.] ***** An equine classic which is exceedingly scarce in any condition. Not in the British Library collection.*****

HEREWITH OUR CLICKS & MORTAR JOTTINGS FOR THE DAY
This page was freshly revised & updated on Wednesday 1st. Sept. 2010. Sunday evening was spent very pleasantly with our charming Australian cousins, Jon & Jane, at a family gathering. (Southport, the holiday town we trade from was crowded with holidaymakers over the weekend and we should have been busy, but the sunny weather decided otherwise; the crowds stayed outside. Surprisingly however books are selling well against natural history specimens, but that may be due to recent spending on choice scholarly items.) Yesterday, Monday, Andrew took over the counter mid-afternoon so that Joan and I could leave early for the food/beverage/music excesses at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party fabulously hosted by the inimitable Martin & Helen. They are a hard act to follow. Our German clients are not buying as much Philosophy through the post as hitherto. Various books sent to China still get lost in the post.
